NANS Reacts to the Alleged N150m bribe from Buhari

The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, recently visited President Muhammadu Buhari and were alleged to have accepted bribes to work for him.

The media team of NANS issues a press release to that effect. Read:

PRESS STATEMENT

_Great Nigerian Students,_

On the issue of NANS visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, 20 million votes promise, alleged N150m bribe, Benz pics being circulated on Social Media, etc.

*We wish to state the following...*

1. We believe that we're much more enlightened to know that the video in circulation is a product of the State House Press Corp. They only captured the area that will benefit the government at the detriment of NANS leadership. #EndASUUStrike

2. We did not have access to any recording object, we depended on what (the pics, clip) they sent to us. Before the meeting started, our phones & gadgets were taken from us (as it's the usual practice anywhere). #EndASUUStrike

3. The leadership of NANS raised some vital points and those issues were not properly addressed nor captured in the said video. #EndASUUStrike

4. Firstly, the NANS President told PMB that there is need for Students to go back to their campuses. He also used the medium to fault the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu for not briefing the President on recent happenings in our institutions. The NANS President, therefore, advised the President to address the communication gap between the leadership of NANS and the key stakeholders in Education. In response, the President applauded the NANS leadership and pleaded for more time, while assuring that all issues in contest will be addressed soon. #EndASUUStrike

5. The twenty (20) million vote was just a subtle threat to PMB that if he doesn't do anything about the strike, about 20 million Nigerian students will be mobilized to vote against him. And if he does, same could as well vote for him. The idea was just to make the President realize that the Students community has the capacity to frustrate his re-election bid if nothing is done to urgently address all issues on ground. #EndASUUStrike

6. Secondly, the NANS President spoke on the issue of politically victimised students on our campuses. He stated that many union leaders have not been able to graduate due to victimisation by management. He told PMB point-blank to ensure he takes urgent steps to address the issue, and gave examples on how OBJ did it during his tenure. Everyone clapped for him including the President himself. He also advised PMB to set-up a committee to that effect. #EndASUUStrike

7. Thirdly, the NANS President also told PMB to look into the issue of unemployment so that Nigerians will be happy at the end of the day. The President replied him by saying he is aware that majority of Nigerians are unemployed, he (PMB) promised the NANS delegate that he has a surprise (employment) package for Nigerians, and that at the end of the day, unemployment will drastically reduce. PMB also went ahead to say that “if our people are okay, they won't even depend on the government.” #EndASUUStrike

8. Also, the NANS President told PMB that he should continue the project he initiated during his time as PTF Chairman. He said that His Excellency as the Chairman of PTF donated buses & infrastructural development in our institutions across the country. In response, the President thanked him for noting such 'developmental strides', and promised to look into it. #EndASUUStrike

9. On the issue of N150m bribe from the Presidency, to us, it doesn't hold water and we are not moved by their lies. That's their hubby whenever there is any industrial action (to sell out struggles). We didn't receive such amount of money from anybody. The propaganda was cooked by naysayers and mischief makers. The Buhari we know will never give such huge amount of money to students. We therefore wish to advise our students not to believe their lies. #EndASUUStrike

10. Finally, we wish to state categorically that the Benz (pics) being circulated on social media does not belong to our President. We therefore wish to advise Alibaba and others to desist from tarnishing the image of our dear association forthwith. #EndASUUStrike

We remain committed to the struggle, and will not relent in our effort until all issues has been addressed. We call on our students not to be dismayed, but remain law abiding and continue to support us as we cannot do it alone.

Thank you for your time.
